Directed by Karel Vachek, Czech Republic, 2019, 335 mins
The six-hour essay examines the history of regimes and revolutions, leaders and martyrs, from a philosophical perspective. The collage of personal memories, staged scenes and archives of collective memory compares the Prague Spring to the Velvet Revolution and shows the exposure, conflict, crisis, and catharsis of the post-communist society. Democracy can be saved through creative laughter, dissolving the untouchability and hypertrophic egos of the representatives of state institutions. The Internet frees the society from representatives of the non-functional connecting link that prevents direct communication between citizens and institutions of power.
The event will also include an expert introduction. You can look forward to Czech film producer and director Radim Procházka, a graduate of FSV UK and documentary filmmaking at FAMU, where he is now a mentor for directing students. He has produced films by Robert Sedláček and is the producer of Karel Vachek's film Communism and the Net or the End of Representative Democracy. He has been working with debutants for a long time, both as a producer and as a programmer of the Prague film club Cyklus Citrus, where he screens debutant films every month and leads public discussions with their authors. Mikuláš Novotný, Czech Producer on the Move (2020), will also give an introduction. In 2012, he co-founded Background Films, where he debuted his films Journey to Rome and Resort. He studied Production at FAMU and Theory of Interactive Media at FF MU. In 2020, he presented Karel Vachek's radical 338-minute opus Communism and the Net or the End of Representative Democracy at the Rotterdam Film Festival. He also works with young authors and artists.
The event is part of the open programme of East Doc Platform 2022, the largest co-production, funding and distribution platform tailor-made for Central and East European documentaries, organised by the Institute of Documentary Film, every year connecting East European filmmakers and decision makers - producers, broadcasters, distributors and festival programmers - from around the world.
The film will be screened in Czech with English subtitles.
