Shadows of History

Audio: Czech, Romanian, Croatian, Hungarian

About

A programme of three short films from the 1960s and 1970s, produced in three of the countries participating in the KineDok project. Drawing on materials discovered in national film archives, the films offer a glimpse into each country’s recent past. They are connected not only by a shared regional history, but also by their engagement with the legacy of previous generations, whether tangible or intangible. The first film, The Gifted City, raises questions that run throughout the entire programme: how we access history today, how film can become complicit in distorting historical truth, and how hidden, darker truths can be uncovered. The second film, Castle Dwellers, focuses on architectural heritage—the physical, tangible remains of history. It explores the social life of imperial castles repurposed by the state in socialist Hungary, as well as the fragile memory of the past once its physical traces have disappeared from the lives of those who witnessed it. The third film, Let Our Voices Be Heard, shifts the focus to intangible heritage. It examines the now-defunct pirate radio stations that once emerged in the Yugoslav countryside and served as important catalysts for popular mobilisation.

By attending the event, visitors give permission to have their person photographed and audiovisually recorded for the promotional purposes of the KineDok project.
