Conference: How To Set Up a Screening Venue

The programme starts at 11:00 and consists of presentations by venue managers, who organize cultural events and screenings in alternative social venues such as cafés, bars or galleries. The conference includes a panel discussion, where expert guests whose experience goes beyond organizing cultural events in alternative venues will share their know-how.

This is the first of two planned conferences that will be based on insights from a forthcoming publication on establishing successful cultural events. This publication will launch during the second conference in March of 2024 dedicated to the topic Fostering Communities. It is created by KineDok managers, coordinators and other experts from all partner countries.

11:30-13:00 Think outside the traditional cinema format

"Think outside the traditional cinema format" is a program that showcases successful stories by venue managers from all KineDok countries presented in the PechaKucha format. These managers organize cultural events and screenings in alternative social venues such as cafes, bars or galleries. Through presentations, attendees will learn about the challenges and opportunities of organizing non-traditional screenings and events, and how to create unique and engaging experiences for audiences. The program encourages thinking beyond the traditional cinema format and highlights the potential of alternative venues to foster community engagement and bring diverse films to new audiences.

14:30-16:00 Empowering Communities through Documentary Film

This session aims to empower communities through the use of documentary film. Annelies Cuba, an Austrian programmer, will present the youth-focused activities of the Wienxtra cultural centre, which aims to encourage young people to explore their creativity through film. Polish film journalist Adam Kruk will introduce the basics of thinking about film in text, teaching participants how to write about film in a critical and engaging way. Enikő Gyureskó, from the Hungarian festival Verzio, will discuss the process of curating and organizing film programmes, highlighting the importance of diversity and inclusivity in film selection. Finally, Matej Sotník will delve into the specific work behind producing and distributing creative documentaries, providing insights into the challenges and rewards of this artistic medium. This program brings together experts from across Europe to inspire and equip participants to use documentary film as a tool for community empowerment.

Enikő Gyureskó

She has over 10 years of experience in project coordination gained in the cultural and civic sphere. She joined VERZIÓ in 2016 as Festival Coordinator and since 2021 she is the Managing Director of the festival, actively involved with the overall festival development strategy, responsible for the supervision of the festival team, design and implementation of the fundraising strategy, grants and financial management, as well as partnerships and rights clearance. She is a board member of MADOKE (Hungarian Documentary Association) and a collaborator of Kinedok Hungary.

Matej Sotník

Matej Sotník is a producer at guča films and co-founder and creative director of FILM EXPANDED Distribution Company. He is the producer of "Notes from Eremocene" by director Viera Čákanyová with world premiere at Berlinale 2023. He is currently producing Lucia Kašová's upcoming film "World Of Walls" shot in South Africa as well as other international co-productions in various stages. As a distributor, he has brought to Slovakia more than 20 films that have been presented at international festivals such as Cannes, IFF Rotterdam or IFF Locarno.

Adam Kruk

Polish film critic, journalist and programmer curating various festivals and cultural events in Poland. His work has appeared in numerous magazines (‘Kino’, ‘Film’, ‘Newsweek’, ‘Images’), as well as in several books on film, art and culture. Speaker at University of Wroclaw, member of European Film Academy, International Federation of Film Critics FIPRESCI, International Federation of Film Societies FICC, Wroclaw Film Foundation, and Dante Alighieri Association.

Annelies Cuba-Fried

She studied the theory of theatre, film and media in Vienna and wrote final thesis about the figures of teachers and students in children’s films. She works in the WIENXTRA-Cinemagic, an art house cinema for children and young people in Vienna. She curates the films for variety of different programmes, short film programmes and organizes workshops of film education with children and young people. If she is not in the cinema, she loves to go hiking in the mountains or cooking for friends.

Ada-Simona Biriș

Ada-Simona Biriș is a curator, museum educator at the Museum of Visual Art of Galati, Romania, with more than 20 years of experience in museum work and in organizing museum events. She had her first collaboration with One World Romania Association in 2013, organizing the project "One World on Tour" at the museum, and since 2015 she has organized the KineDok project in the city of Galati, at the museum: weekly screenings and debates with guests.

Ana Barjadze 

Born in Gori, Georgia 1998 Ana is  co-founder and member  "Gori Photographers' Club"  which is a non-entrepreneurial  legal entity based on voluntary membership, whose main goal is to promote the development of art in Gori.  She was regional coordinator at Cinedoc Tbilisi, In 2021 Ana Barjadze graduated from Shota Rustaveli University of Theater and Cinema, Faculty of Documentary Film Directing. She was chosen at Jihlava Academy in 2021, currently working on the first full-length documentary "Bitter Sugar", which was selected at 8 international development and pitching programs, received funding from the Georgian National Film Center and won the Adami Media prize. She is also a co-founder and member of KSELI - network of organizations and people advocating revitalization of abandoned cinema houses and cultural spaces in the regions of Georgia.

Zuzana Hrušková

"I am based in the Gallery of Ľudovít Fulla - Slovak National Gallery in Ružomberok, Slovakia. Being an artist, I work across documentary and conceptual photography, film, video and writing. The idea to start projecting alternative documentaries came in 2017. We are a team of 6 people, all women who run an entire programme of the gallery. We decided to invest in film screenings as there was a need to educate, change and/or invest into a local community in the region of Liptov. Since then we run monthly projections named KINO U FULLU. The whole idea behind screenings is that we invite directors or someone from the creative team to discuss with the audience. Being a gallery, we screen films with socio-cultural themes. It is interesting to watch what a good quality documentary can do to society. It takes a lot of patience to see the outcome."

Veronika Hanáková

Veronika Hanáková is a graduate of Film Studies and New Media at Charles University in Prague. In the past, she has collaborated with film festivals, such as Mezinárodní festival dokumentárních filmů Ji.hlava or the Mezipatra QFF. Currently, she is involved in the film dramaturgy of the Kampus Hybernská, which recently became one of the screening venues of KineDok.

Szilágyi Levente

Levente runs Kinodomino, the creative team of enthusiasts who organize Kinedok screenings in Miskolc. With a background in cultural anthropology and foreign languages he has been working as a translator for a number of film festivals, production companies and distributors. He has been involved in the Kinedok program in Hungary since the beginning as one of the translators. Having worked with many documentaries he is convinced that these films have a very strong potential to help people better understand the world around them and to aid and support beneficial changes in society.

Miro Frakić

Miro Frakić worked as a program assistent at International Festival of New Film in Split, he was member of Critics Jury at 14th edition of the Festival 25 FPS, and since 2021 he has been working as assistant of Dokukino KIC. He won Vladimir Vuković Award for the best young critic in 2019, which is awarded by Croatian Society of Film Critics, of which he is now a member. At the Faculty of Humanites and Social Sciences in Zagreb, where he is a lector at the Department of Scandinavian Studies, he also gives guest lectures on Swedish film for children and youth and Swedish queer film. His texts have been published in “Filmonaut”, “Hrvatski filmski ljetopis” journal, on “Zona filma” by Croatian Society of Film Critics and other web portals. He participated in a number of film criticism workshops, among others Sarajevo Talents and the workshop by Kino klub Split lead by Jonathan Rosenbaum.
