KineDok, the European initiative dedicated to promoting creative documentaries in alternative venues, is back in Brașov this year to celebrate its 10th anniversary, with a selection of films and discussions with filmmakers and special guests. There will also be a dedicated day to VR films for an exciting premiere.
The local edition is organized in collaboration between the One World Romania Association, national organizer, and Artburg Cultural Association, the local organizer and long-time partner of the program. KineDok Brașov is a project funded by the Brașov County Council.
This year, KineDok Brașov will begin on October 8 at 6:30 PM at the Multicultural Center of Transilvania University with a screening of the documentary +-90 (Slovakia, 2022, 90 min.), which won awards at One World Slovakia and the Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival in 2022.
In +-90, filmmaker Marek Kuboš opens up to his colleagues from the Slovak documentary film industry and brings them together to talk about their passion for cinema as well as the technical, economic and ethical challenges they face. The film also speculates on the future of documentary filmmaking. It particularly focuses on a successful generation that emerged in the 1990s, making connections between national history, film history and personal narratives, while serving as an autobiographical documentary.
The opening screening will be followed by a discussion with two special guests: documentary filmmaker Alexandru Solomon and actor Gabriel Spahiu. They will use the film's context as a starting point to examine the evolution of Romania's cultural scene from the 1990s until today.

“I’m thrilled that we can celebrate 10 years of documentary film in Brașov. It’s a great achievement for us that we have helped create a community that cares about documentaries and joins us in discussions about important issues happening around us and across the globe. Since 2015, we’ve had the pleasure of screening dozens of films and discussing them with over 1,500 viewers and more than 60 guests. This is truly remarkable, especially given that we’re working with non-fiction films that often deal with sensitive topics.”, says Laura Căpățână Juller, President of the Artburg Association.
On a national level, the anniversary edition offers an extensive catalog: In addition to 13 current documentary films from the participating countries – including the Czech Republic, Croatia, Georgia, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania – the local partners can also draw on a selection of archive films, a focus on Ukraine, a short film program and two VR films. In total, the selection includes 24 works and is available until April 2025.
